Does the Netgeneration value their privacy?

The net generation; it is the generation that grew up with technology. They know everything about the Internet, are online all day and know how to multitask. They all have websites and share a lot about themselves on the Internet. They don’t know how to live without technology. But how far do they go? Is the net generation for sharing everything on the Internet and do they consider privacy an old-fashioned idea?

The Net generation has access to so many devices like email, instant messages and are able to download music and videos. Thanks to these devices these children can communicate very easily with each other. But do they know their limits. It is a good thing that they are so well known with the Internet but they are also very vulnerable, socially incapable, influent for other people’s opinions and shameless.

For example; people placing pictures of their selves being drunk or mentioning intimate things like drugs or sex on their pages, with no shame at all. But it is a public page, for everybody easily to see. Which has many risks to it. Figures have shown that things like this are causing a growing number of failing job applications. Employers can easily do a ‘reference test’ by checking out your website. To them and to others this shows how this person has a lack of their personal privacy.

Therefore it is clear that the net generation is able to go too far in sharing everything on the net. Which concludes that they do not value their privacy like other generations did.

Online shopping

ONLINE SHOPPING
It seems to me that over the last few years everybody of our generation has become lazier. Everything around us is made easier; we even do our shopping online. Especially online shopping is becoming very popular, but why?
According to researchers about 83% of people have ever shopped online . That is a huge figure, but not surprising since almost every store has their own website. Even your groceries can be ordered online. We have a world population of 6,767,805,208 people, of whom 1,668,870,408 people use the Internet . That means a lot of people are online these days.
However, what are the real advantages of shopping on the web. It seems that there are many reasons, from hoping to find low-prices to no crowds to the fact that it is easier.
I expected that one of the negative things about shopping online would be the safety of it, but it turns out people don’t have a problem with it at all. Searching trough the web I found out that the definite main reason people shop online is the ability to shop 24/7, any time they want. Very closely followed by the fact that people save time by not having to travel to the shop . And to be honest, those seem a few pretty good reasons to me too.

So all in one, there seem to be some good reasons to shop on the Internet. A lot op people have done it sometime, you can shop any time you want, it is timesaving and it even seems safe. So why not give the online shops a try? I will.

Is Twitter a valuable tool for communication or is Twitter a hype?

These days there are many ways to communicate with one another. One of the most popular ways of communication of the last few years has become the Internet. Almost everybody of this generation uses email; web logs, or has their own web profile like Facebook, Myspace or Hyves. Another form of communication that has shown up recently is Twitter, an international network in which users publish short messages on what they are doing, and share their opinions on subjects. It is a very handy way to quickly see what all your friends and family are doing at the moment, and it is starting to become more and more popular. But has Twitter become a valuable form of communication or is it just another media hype?

Although I must admit that the whole idea of just posting a short message on your page is something new and interesting for people in your network to read, I don’t believe it is a valuable tool for communication. It might be for now, but you can’t count on it. We live in a fast generation. People are always searching for something new and get bored very easily. For example look at the previous media hypes like Hyves and Myspace. For the moment people are all focussed on that particular communication tool, but look how fast we change our interest.

That’s is why Twitter has become such a media hype at the moment. It is the newest interesting communication tool that everyone has to try out for a certain while, until the next best thing shows up on the Internet. That is why I believe Twitter is just a media hype and cannot be seen as a valuable tool of communication.

My name is Florence Vollebregt and I’m a first year ICM student at the Hogeschool van Utrecht. I am 20 years old and I live in Amsterdam.
